The freedom of the press was the American principal established by the Zenger trial. Freedom of the press is an important part of American democracy because it allows American people to publish their opinions and and spread ideas quickly and without fear of prosecution. The press is a powerful tool that can expose and persuade people in an efficient way. mercantilism and the Navigation acts were put in place to help Britain pay for the French and Indian war. Goods could really only be imported and exported on English ships. Mercantilism an economic system where colonies export raw goods and materials to a mother country where items are then manufactured, taxed, and shipped back to the colony for consumption. The navigation acts were enforced to protect British trade. Pilgrims and Puritans left England partly to have more religious freedom they thought that the people should have more say in how they worship god, but the secular and religious worlds were still very much entwined in the colonies. It was a sin not to practice christianity and there were still right and wrongs ways to worship. Religious dissenters were people who questioned the leadership and morals of the church. One of the most famous dissenters was Roger Williams, who thought that government should not interfere with the church and that religious freedom was important. He was banished for his believes, but then founded the colony if Rhode Island where there was complete religious tolerance. His ideas ended up influencing a right now given to all Americans which is the freedom of religion. Jamestown was a risky experiment. There were many failures that could of been prevented, but there were also some surprising success. The colonists that were brought to America were investors who wanted to get rich off of gold that they though was in the new world. It became a challenge when there wasn't any gold and there also weren't enough people who were willing to farm. This led to mass starvation and death in the winters. A success was the tobacco crops that grew well in the region. It gave the colony a revenue stream. both the Carolina and Chesapeake colonies had mostly rural settlements. Before 1676 The Carolina and Chesapeake colonies had large populations of indentured servants to work the land. after the Bacon's rebellion they transitioned to slave labor.
